Please join me at Roland Park Elementary/Middle School on Thursday, February 6th for an Architectural Lecture and Principal's Symposium.
RPEMS is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year. Palmer & Lamdin were the architects of the school, which was built in 1925, and then expanded less than two years later!
I have written about RPEMS before (here) and even attended the school in kindergarten and first grade. But I had never looked closely at the archictecture of the school until last week when a new friend and I headed over to fly a drone around and take pictures.
We were mobbed by the children in the after-school program, which, in a way, added to the fun of the afternoon. It was only with the drone that we could get photos of all of the details which make P&L projects so extraordinary.
The brickwork in the building shows P&L's attention to detail, especially in these arched windows, and the details above them.
Another thing that I discovered is that the brick colums are possibly octagonal, or hexagonal. They show up in two places, the campanille and the south addition.
Once I finish the lecture, I will publish the whole thing, complete with images, here.
